How to Choose an American Black Walnut Tea Table

Check the species, sourcing record and construction by component. Color and grain are clues, not proof.

Start with the name. American walnut is Juglans nigra, but “walnut” may also describe a veneer or a color. Ask for the botanical name and a part-by-part material list for the exact model and version.

If North American origin matters, ask the supplier for written sourcing information tied to the wood in the version being quoted. The species name identifies the tree, not where it grew.

Check the construction part by part. Find out whether the top, apron, legs and other components are solid black walnut, walnut veneer over another material, or something else. Veneer is real walnut, but the component is not solid walnut throughout.

Color and grain are only clues. Black walnut heartwood ranges from light brown to dark chocolate, while the sapwood can be much paler. Stain, finish, lighting and photography also affect appearance. None of these can confirm species, origin or solid-wood construction.

Photos of the actual table and its edges can show visible construction, but they cannot authenticate the species. For a higher-value order, get the supplier's material declaration and sourcing records. If you need independent species confirmation, ask a qualified wood-identification professional to assess a sample.

FAS is a lumber grade, not a species or origin label. AHEC's summary of NHLA rules says FAS boards yield at least 83⅓% clear-wood cuttings under specific board requirements. That grade does not prove a table is American walnut, that the wood came from North America, or that every part is solid wood.

For example, the published Linear Tea Table 8601 page lists solid American Black Walnut and mortise-and-tenon joinery. These are claims for that model, not a visual test for other tables. Confirm the material specification for the version you are considering.
